In April and May 2024, while working near the student encampments at MIT, I began photographing the demonstrations I encountered on my way home each evening. I intentionally avoided photographing identifiable faces, focusing instead on the structures surrounding the protests: signs, flags, architecture, traffic, and, increasingly, the news helicopters that circled overhead around the same time each afternoon:
5 PM.
I became interested in the relationship between demonstration and documentation. The helicopters arrived because something was happening below them, but their arrival also seemed to signal another phase of activity on the ground. The observer and the observed seemed to respond to one another. A symbiotic relationship formed over time.
Alongside these photographs, I am experimenting with my grandfather's inherited newspapers and my own contemporary news clippings. Pages from his newspaper contain reporting from earlier political conflict and American student protests. Juxtaposing these with contemporary news outlets, these media snapshots have become artifacts through which I consider how political events are witnessed, mediated, remembered, and reinterpreted across generations.
